Tutankhamun
![]()
NEBKHEPRURIA. XVIII Dynasty 1333 – 1323 BC. Even today the
Egyptologist debate the name variations of the Forgotten Pharaoh. It’s enough to
think that in the first years of his reign, he was Aton’s follower to then
return to the ancient religion: this explains the passage from the name
Tutankhaton to Tutankhamen. The Tut-Ankh-amon version, seems to be the most
correct one according to the present level of the studies. The three etyms that compose the name respectively mean: TUT – Royal sign, that is radical of the royal Egyptian schiatta; ANKH – Sign of life; AMON – Sign of divinity, that is a divine unit. “Perfect the life of Amon”, child-pharaoh of the XVIII dynasty is destined to a series of circumstances of eternal fame, he was Akhenaten’s son in law and maybe adopted son. He ascended to the throne when he was only 9 years old, reigned for a decade, during which his predecessor’s religious revolution was completely cancelled: Amon was again considered the main divinity, the ancient ones were rehabilitated, altough he didn’t persecute Aton in any way. Tell el-Amarna was abandoned for
Memphis and the clergy had its great authority again. Anyway, the real followers of the very
young pharaoh weren’t the priests but the militaries, who thought a pacifying
work was necessary to bring up again the international situation of the country.
It’s so not casual that to the very young tutankhamun, who died at only 19 years
old for unknown causes, succeeded Kheperkheprure Ay, a common citizen who
distinguished himslef for his remarkable military skills and the complete
support from Amon’s priests. And maybe, precisely Ay’s mania of greatness
guaranteed tutankhamun on eternal fame. The young pharaoh’s successor, in fact,
wanted to take possession of the great funeral monument already built for him in
the valley of the kings, exchanging it with his own more modest one. Precisely
for its small size, the latter, after a first attempt of sack, was buried, lost
and forgotten by everybody for centuries. So, when in 1922, the englishmen
Carnavon and Carter discovered it, the beautiful monument was extraordinarily
intact. The real treasure it has given us (which today is in the Museum in
Cairo), with the legendary curse that would hare been upon the desecrators, has
definitely put the child – pharaoh in the honors of glory.
