At Ramses’s XI death, Smendes ascended to the throne, whose origins are still unknown. According to some historian he could be one of Herihor’s relatives, while for others he was Ramses’s XI son-in-law who legitimized his ascent to the throne thanks to his marriage with one of the last Ramses’s daughters. Not much is known about him, who appears many times in “Unamon’s Story” as a king who divided the power with Herihor, Amon’s high priest in Karnak. It’s known he married a princess named Tentamon and in second marriage, Mutnedjiem, the woman who gave him the future heir to the throne, Psusennes. Smendes is famous for moving tha capital of the empire from Pi-Ramses to Tanis and for founding the new dynasty denominated “tanita”. Tanis so became the royal family’s homeland. From this city in the Delta, in which Smendes substituted Seth’s cult with the one for the teban threefold, the pharaohs exerted their own sovereignty. |
