The paesant

|
The peasant was illiterate and the social consideration he had was not equal
to the hard work he did. He used different kinds of tools, among these, the Shaduf, a kind of trellis that supported a staff, on one end there was a counterbalance and on the other a pail that, immerged in the water and filled, could be transported where it was needed. The land that the peasant cultivated was never his own, but it belonged to the crown or to a sacerdotal order. His work depended on the flood of the river. He was helped by a sower that spread the seed in the furrows. Often a functionary of the owner of the land was present. The hardest time for the peasant was the harvest, in fact he had to work under the pharaoh’s inspector’s supervision, who had to determinate the quota of the product that would be taken from him. After the harvest, the scribe would come and decided the amount of the taxes.
