The temple in Luxor

Le colonne del tempio

The temple in Luxor had already been mostly built by Amenhotep III (1387-1348 BC). Here Ramses added, in front of the existant structure, a court with a portico, held by 72 columns very decorated in two lines, and an enormous pier with scenes of the battle in Qadesh. All this is preceded by six colossal statues with his features and by two obelisks. In Luxor only one is left, because the other one is, since 1836 in Place de la Concorde, in Paris. It is on the oriental bank of the Nile river. The impressive building is joined to the temple complex in Karnak, where there is Ammone’s temple, by the Path of the Sphinxes, around three and a half kilometers long, on which the ancient Egyptians held processions for the annual celebration of the flood.
