Religious celebrations in the Ancient Egypt -
Irradiation
Solar worship has always been a basilar element in the ancient Egypt
theology.
For this reason, in temples, a ceremony called “irradiation” used to be
performed, in which the statue of the god would be carried outside to
receive the regenerating hug of the sun.
In the Temple of Amon-Ra at
Karnak the ceremony would probably be
performed under the open sky, in a hall against the northern wall of the
“Festival Hall” of Thutmosi III.
During the “new year festival” the pharaoh used to receive divine energy
by joining his father Ra through a ritual called “joining the sun”.
During the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, in the temples of Efdu and
Dendera special chapels were built on the roofs, where the statue of the
god used to be carried to receive the benevolent sunbeams.
At the beginning of every year the statue would be carried onto the roof
during a solemn procession, through an intricate stair system built into
the wall for this only purpose.
In Dendera the procession used to be opened by the queen, who, shaking
two sistrums, would precede the pharaoh and 53 priests along with
jubilant followers coming from everywhere
