The house of life
| To the great temples, cultural centers were annexed,
of which we have an approximate knowledge. It seems they were reported about by the scribes that copied the funeral books to sell them to people that wanted to put them in their own tombs. It seems that even the erudite priests were part of these colleges, that held the keys to knowledge. In fact, actually in the houses of life, the Egyptian scientific knowledge began and the priests studied in detail the religious traditions of the Country. Certainly, there were professors in these houses of life, that gave literary and sacerdotal lessons to the children that attended the schools in the temples. We have got information about pharaohs that consulted the scribes in the house of life for religious or cultural matters. The houses of life were real centers in which magic was practiced and there were formulas to “ deprive of the breath of life” anyone who had betrayed its secrets. |
