Hapi

Hapi.
Genius of the Nile
The force that animates the river, Hapi “gods’ father”.
The only one who created himself and whose origin is unknown.
Master of the fish, rich of grain….
Hapi is represented by an opulent divinity, who represented both sexes and a tuft of papyrus on his head.
The ancient Egyptians, believed that the Nile came from the ocean that surrounded the earth, the Nun, of which Hapi was a second form.
Maybe it’s actually for this, that the Egyptians called the Nile “the sea”(iuma).
The life in Egypt was strictly bound to the flood of the river, this explains the expression of Erodoto “Egypt is a gift from the Nile2. It’s so easily understood how a source of life so powerful has been associated to a sacred idea.
