He was a very ancient divinity, probably originary of northern Egypt. He was
worshipped in all Egypt, and it seems he had a particular cult in the high
valley of the Nile, in Esnah and in Elefantina, a city associated to Anuket and
to Satet.
Khnum was worshipped also in Antinoe, where he was celebrated with his bride
Satet. He was a goat-God and the fact that his name coincided with one of the
many ways that the ram was designated, leads to believe that it was a divinity
that came from Asia. He was represented with the head of a goat with a crown.
Khnum appears as “the creator”, the divine potter who with the lathe had shaped
the egg from which the world and man were born. From the V dynasty the priests
in Eliopoli associated him with the Sun, with the name Khnum-Ra.
