The Craftsmen

| Only a few craftsmen were able to go out of anonymity and sign their own works. The small craftsmen rarely had a permanent working place near the village in which they lived. They were often forced in tiring and long journeys. The most used material was gold, that was abundant in the mines in Nubia and in the eastern desert. The gold was worked and stamped with a pointed tool, furnaces were used, that were necessary to melt the gold when there was a handle to make or a spout had to be added to a vase. The carpenters and the furniture-makers were very capable, though Egypt was forced to import wood, which it lacked, from Lebanon. |
