Surely the sacred part of ancient Waset, the famous Karnak, is one of the most famous places in Egypt and in the world.
Karnak, domain of the god Amon, where from the XII dynasty the pharaohs ordered to build a great complex, that during the centuries became one of the most colossal works of antiquity. The group of temples have not been built in the same period, but in almost two thousand years, when the pharaohs of the XVIII and XIX dynasty in particular, alternated themselves in the role of devisors. The pharaohs of the New Reign wanted to pay homage to god Amon, building colossal statues, upraising piers, preparing great hypostyle chambers and decorating the walls.
To do this they didn’t hesitate to demolish the constructions built by their predecessors to use again the stones considered sacred for eternity.
The great site is surrounded by walls and divided in three main areas:
The area of the temple of Amon “Opet-isut", that is” the chosen place”
The walls in Mut   (south Karnak)
The walls in Month  (north Karnak)
The path of the sphinxes lead from the temple of Amon to the walls in Mut.
It was built by Amenhotep III

and restored by Ramesse III

It’s surrounded by a sacred lake with the shape of a horse.
The temple in Month, the smallest of the three complexes in Karnak, is also Amenhotep’s III work.
Amenhotep I made various interventions but unfortunately only very few traces are left.


Of Hatshepsut only the chambers around the Sanctuary of Amon’s sacred boat and two obelisks remain.

Of Tuthmosi III it’s the room for celebrations, the sixth pier, some obelisks and the hall between the fourth and the fifth pier, besides the walls of the sanctuary.

The third pier and the central colonnade of the hypostyle chamber are made by Amenhotep III, a chamber that was completed by Horemheb,

On the southern side the path of the sphinxes lead to the great temple in Luxor, begun by Amenhotep III
On an inscription on the outside of his sanctuary he wanted to hand down to his successors the following words:

“ I built Amon’s temple in beautiful white stone,
I have made the shutters of the doors in acacia wood,
Encrusted with gold and with bronze hinges;
The name Amon is inlaid in precious stones”
