Apries

| Son of Psammetico II, at the beginning of his reign was a very energetic pharaoh. He began a war against the Phoenician, in Sidone and he besieged Tiro for thirteen years, only Nabucodonosor’s (king in Babylon) intervention prevented him from conquering the city. He supported the Jewish rebellion against the king in Babylon after the fall of Gerusalemme and he gave refuge to many Jewish fugitives. The Jews founded many communities, among them Elefantina that became the most prosper. Apres used Greek mercenaries for his military campaigns and this soon caused discontent in the national army, particularly in the Libyan soldieres, that were offended and organized revolts in Nubia. The discontent grew, when a Greek army slaughtered some Egyptian soldiers that Apries had sent to help the Libyans in Cirene. According to a stele in Cairo, it was supported by Amasi. During a revolt, Apries guided his Greek mercenaries against the rebels commanded by Amasi, when defeated, he was treated with respect from his enemy, but the Egyptians were not satisfied and demanded that he should be delivered to them. He was suffocated. Anyway Amasi buried his rival pharaoh with all honors and demanded that his funeral cult should be kept. |
